What Is CPR & How to Perform It

CPR 101: What It Means and Why It Matters

The time frame becomes vitally important whenever someone collapses without a heartbeat or breathing. That’s where CPR comes in. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) works as a life-saving procedure which keeps oxygen-rich blood flowing to vital organs until medical professionals reach the scene.

The American Heart Association indicates that cardiac arrests occur at home 70% of the time yet most people lack proper training to respond. One Love CPR believes that everyone should learn CPR’s meaning and develop the ability to perform it.

What Does CPR Stand For?

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation:

  • Cardio refers to the heart.
  • Pulmonary refers to the lungs.
  • Resuscitation involves reviving an individual from unconsciousness or death’s edge.

CPR functions by performing chest compressions and rescue breaths to replicate heart and lung functions which buys time until emergency services can take over.

When Should You Perform CPR?

If a person is unresponsive and shows no breathing signs you should perform CPR.

  • Unresponsive and not breathing.
  • CPR is necessary for someone who exhibits no active circulation signs or who is only making gasping sounds for breath.
  • Suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.

Remember: Being proactive during uncertain situations produces better results than doing nothing at all. CPR helps to boost survival rates by two to three times.

How to Perform CPR in 5 Steps

The following text acts as a clear instruction manual to perform CPR correctly.

1. Check Responsiveness & Call for Help

  • Place your hand on their shoulder and ask them in a loud voice if they are alright.
  • If there is no response from the person immediately call 911 or ask another person to place the call.
  • Get another person to find an AED if one is available.

2. Open the Airway

  • Lift the person’s chin while tilting their head back slightly to open their airway.
  • Listen and watch for normal breathing patterns during a 10-second observation window.

3. Start Chest Compressions

  • Place both hands on the center of the chest.
  • Press down hard and fast: Execute chest compressions at a depth of two inches while maintaining a pace between 100 and 120 strokes per minute.
  • Allow full recoil between compressions.

4. Give Rescue Breaths (If Trained)

  • After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths.
  • Verify that the chest moves up with every breath administered.
  • Hand-only CPR remains an effective choice when you have no formal training or feel uneasy about providing rescue breaths.

5. Continue Until Help Arrives

Do not stop unless:

  • The person starts breathing
  • An AED is ready to use
  • EMS professionals take over
  • You are too exhausted to continue

Coilin is amazing.
He was wonderful and helped me understand the course in my first language, Portuguese. Because when we are in moments of tension, we can’t think — we have to act.

Looking for a skills location? This is the spot! I had a great experience and highly recommend one love CPR. I’ve been a nurse for over 10 years and taken many a CPR course. Colin’s teaching method is tried & true and he did a fantastic job at stimulating a realistic environment. I did BLS part 1 online beforehand so I was dismissed early (after about an hour), but I enjoyed myself so much I’ll probably just sign up for the full 3-hr course next time I have to renew! Believe me, you could know nothing and walk out of there with the skills and confidence to save a life.

As a RN working in skilled nursing for over 13 years, this by far is one of the most indept CPR courses I've ever taken. The CPR renewal is usually a quick walk through and not indepth, but like everything else in healthcare guidelines change and we need more than just a quick walk through. This was an amazing experience. Highly recommend 👌!!!!
